Native to tropical regions, especially India and Bangladesh, jute is a long, soft, shiny plant fibre that is spun into strong, resistant threads. Environmentally friendly, jute is a rain-fed crop with little need for fertiliser or pesticides, 100% biodegradable and recyclable. The fibre is extracted from the stem and outer skin of the plant through retting. As the plants are harvested, they are gathered together in bundles. The retting process involves placing the bundles in water to soften before stripping. After the fibre has been stripped from the plant, it is washed and laid out to dry before spinning. Fresh, rustic, and textured, jute rugs present exceptional insulating and anti-static properties.
